In 2021, Google will be updating its algorithm to Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor.
So if your site is not optimised for Core Web Vitals then you will be loosing your SERP rank.
The aim of this change is to focus on the user experience of pages and how much time users returned to your site rather than On-Page SEO targeting or traditional ways.
Google has announced different elements that will play a vital role in determining user experience of a page. Those are:-
- Core Web Vitals:- It’s basically combination of there factors
- Latest Contentful Paint.
- First Input Delay
- Cumulative Layout Shift
They measure the visual loading, interactivity and visual stability of a page.
- Mobile-friendliness:- it looks at how much a website is easy to use on mobile, it’s loading time and readability of content.
- Safe Browsing:- it accesses whether a site have viruses, phishing or malware content or have genuine content.
- HTTPS:- it basically builds trust with the user that our site is safe and secure and it’s preferred by Google.
Now this will make sure that after reading this your site is ready for this algorithm change. I have put some most important optimizations for your site to stand out in page experience.
Here we go:-
1.Preload Main Resources to Speed Up Visual Load Times:-
“First impression is the last impression” many times you have heard this and this line is exact what Google is following.
Your loading time and appearance of the page is the first indicator of your page on Google.
This is where first Core Web Vital – largest Contentful Paint(LCP) come in role it basically measures how quickly your on-page elements loads.
So now to identify a page LCP elements is just simply inspect the page in chrome and use devtools to diagnose and it will show you the waterfall chart in performance tab and don’t forget to tick on screenshots.
This will help you to quickly visualize the different page elements load.
Now to solve this issue, we can just tell the browser to preload the first priority elements first by writing a simple code.
2.Optimize Main Thread Activity:-
Their are many things which are happening behind the webpage and anything can make a user wait to repond. This will make a bad experience for user and Google also notice this and can decrease your site rank.
Here comes the second Core Web Vital metric – First Input Delay(FID).
This experience can be frustrating for a user so we need to find and solve this issue and reduce the waiting time between human interactions and browser responses.
Long tasks in chrome devtools can be found at the top of the waterfall chart under main tab and they are highlighted by the red triangle.
If you want to go more deep into this, you can click on long task and go into bottom-up tab, this will break down into different activities that occured within the task, and make you find the small issue and solve them to solve to rank higher.
To fix these issues, it vary depending on the activities but the common fix is that you just split the code into small chunks.
3.Reserve Space For Images & Embeds:-
The third Core Web Vitals Metric, Cumulative Layout Shift(CLS), it looks at the visual layout of the page.
This basically measures the problems or frustrating areas of poor UX.
In simple language, a user clicks on a link and finds that he/she landed on a wrong link or different area of the page. This will make bad experience for user.
You can find this issue in Chrome Devtools screenshot feature in the performance tab.
To resolve this issue you need to provide some space to make a load into for images and videos.

This is a best way to check each page.
